About traditional saunas

Traditional sauna with electric stove, stones and wooden bucket

Traditional saunas heat the air and a load of stones with an electric stove. Pouring water over the stones raises the humidity for a short burst of steam. Room temperatures commonly run between about 60 and 100 °C (140–212 °F), so these cabins need a suitable stove, a dedicated circuit and ventilation planned by the installer.

This line also includes traditional-style wooden cabins with transom windows and computer control panels that use infrared heaters. Each product page states the heating type listed in the specification, so you can tell stove models and infrared models apart.

Dry sauna, wet sauna or steam room?

A dry sauna is a stove sauna used with little or no water on the stones. Ladling water turns it into what many people call a wet or steam sauna, with a brief rise in humidity. A steam room is a different product: a sealed, tiled room filled by a steam generator. Our cabins are stone saunas, not steam rooms. Read sauna vs steam room for the differences.

Sizing the stove

Stove power depends on room volume, insulation and glass area. Listed models use stoves of around 3.5 to 6 kW. A common starting point is about 1 kW per 1.3 m³ (45 cu ft) of well-insulated room, adding capacity for glass walls; the stove maker's sizing chart always governs.

StoveTypical room volumeCurrent at 230–240V
3.5 kWup to about 4.5 m³ (160 cu ft)about 15 A
4.5 kWabout 4.5–6 m³ (160–210 cu ft)about 19 A
6 kWabout 6–8 m³ (210–280 cu ft)about 25 A

Send your room dimensions and we will match the stove and confirm the electrical requirement. See the sauna heater guide for kW sizing and controls.

What to check for an indoor traditional sauna

  • Ventilation: plan intake and exhaust vents with the installer.
  • Electrical: a dedicated 220–240V circuit for the stove, installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Wood: Canadian hemlock or red cedar on most cabins; benches should stay comfortable at high heat.
  • Stones and accessories: buckets, ladles, thermometers and sand timers can ship in the same order.

Who it suits

Finnish style saunas suit buyers who want high heat and steam: homeowners with a basement or bathroom space, hotels, gyms and spas. For hotels, gyms and spas see our commercial buying guide. For a backyard, compare outdoor saunas with electric or wood-burning stoves, and for gentle, lower-temperature heat see far infrared saunas.

FAQ

What size stove does a traditional sauna need?

Stove power depends on room volume, insulation and glass area. Listed models use stoves of around 3.5 to 6 kW. Send your room dimensions and we will match the stove and confirm the electrical requirement, which is usually a dedicated 220–240V circuit.

Can traditional saunas be used with water and steam?

Yes, stove saunas with stones allow water to be ladled onto the stones for steam. Infrared-heated cabins in this line should not have water poured on the heaters. Each product page lists the heating type, so check it before ordering.

What is a dry sauna?

A dry sauna is a traditional sauna heated by a stove, used with little or no water on the stones, so the air stays hot and the humidity low. Room temperatures commonly run about 60 to 100 °C. Adding water to the stones briefly raises the humidity.

Do you supply sauna accessories with these cabins?

Buckets, ladles, thermometers, sand timers and accessory sets are available in the accessories line and can be packed in the same shipment. Many accessories can also carry your logo and custom packaging, which makes branded sauna bundles easy to put together for retail.

Can I install a traditional sauna indoors at home?

Yes, indoor traditional saunas are common in basements, bathrooms and home gyms. Plan a suitable stove for the room volume, a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician, intake and exhaust ventilation, and a floor that tolerates heat and water.
